  NET TELEPHONY HIT

In the first serious attack on the growing use of Net telephony, BellSouth has decided to charge companies carrying long-distance phone calls over the Internet the same access fees as paid by the traditional long-distance phone carriers. It is the first time a local phone company has charged carriers for Net calls and is expected to become a test case for government regulators. Access fees normally make up about 40% of long-distance phone bills. BellSouth intends to start charging in November. Expect a big row. -----------------------------------------------------------------

TRIVA ON THE WEB

Everyone is on the Web,  the  Hells Angels have a home page, and just to show they are up with it, they also have a commercial arm BigRed  Everyone is on the Web.   Speaking of Angels there is also a large number of religions on the Web. One I found The Church of the SubGenius, has a simple approach, just send money.  I noticed also that at the other end of the spectrum the Vatican is on the Web now although they need a good designer for the page, a very slow loading page from my connection.

   MONSTER DISCOVERED

Ever heard of monster moonshine? Wrong - it’s not illicit liquor from the Kentucky hills, but a branch of mathematics so advanced only 10 people in the world can understand it. Its author, Professor Richard Borcherds of Cambridge University, has just been awarded the coveted Fields Medal for this and his work on vertex algebra. As far as Things can understand, he’s developed a whole new branch of mathematics to handle vast concepts like something that exists in 196,883 dimensions (that’s the Monster). More Information

   BEHEMOTH IS TOPS

The Seattle Times remarks that on Friday, for a few minutes, Microsoft was the most valuable company in the world. On paper, anyway. As shares see-sawed, the behemoth was valued at $239.5 billion and General Electric $239.3 billion. By close of trading, GE regained the lead with a market value of $245 billion, ahead of Microsoft at $238 billion. Which makes Wall Street hard to read - Microsoft's annual sales of $14.5 billion are not impressive next to GE’s $88 billion. But then, Micrososft has only been around since 1975 while GE was incorporated in 1892.

   REGULATION PLAN FLOATS

The US Federal Communications Commission has posted a working paper on regulating access to the Internet. Examining the issues raised by the convergence of Internet and cable services, it says the distinction between heavily regulated basic telecom services and unregulated Net services is now less clear. The report outlines scenarios for new laws governing Internet services delivered via cable. The FCC’s news release and full text of the report is  Here -----------------------------------------------------------------

   ORIGINAL CERFER HONOURED

Vinton G. Cerf, sometimes known as the "Father of the Internet" for his work on transmission protocols, has been elected chairman of the Internet Society's board of trustees for contributions “without peer.” Cerf was the founding president of the Society from 1992 to 1995. -----------------------------------------------------------------

   LICENSES UP

Cnet reports a Gartner Group study to be released this week reveals Microsoft is cutting out "concurrent" licensing for its BackOffice products, meaning increased costs as companies pay per user rather than by workstation. Gartner estimates a company with 5,000 desktops would pay 224% more over five years -----------------------------------------------------------------

   JAVA TRIAL

Sun and Microsoft start battling it out in court tomorrow over Sun’s claims that the behemoth tried to create incompatible versions of Java, and attempted to close distribution channels for the new language. Sun sued for breach of contract in October, and broadened the suit in May, alleging copyright violations and unfair competition. It wants the court to order Microsoft to modify its Java features in Windows and Internet Explorer to get back in step with Sun’s standards.

   PRINTERS DOWN

The sale of printers in the Asia/Pacific region in Q2 totalled 1.6 million, down almost 9% from a year ago, according to Dataquest. Exceptions were China (up 77%) and India (up 33%), making China the largest printer market in the region. See HERE
  -----------------------------------------------------------------

   NEC RAIDED

Mixed news for NEC - in Japan, it’s been raided by Tokyo prosecutors on suspicions that NEC was involved in recent Defence Department scandals while in Europe, European Commission has cleared a plan for NEC to take control of PC maker Packard Bell by riaing its stake to almost 53%. -----------------------------------------------------------------

   CUSTOMERS HIT BACK

The Wall Street Journal says Intel’s biggest customers - IBM, Compaq and Hewlett-Packard - want Intel to use new technology they’ve created which can double the speed of data movement in a PC. The paper says it’s a rare instance of the customer taking the initiative from the supplier.
  -----------------------------------------------------------------    WINNER, LOSER

Dell, which successfully pioneered computer sales on the Net, is to spend $90 million on a third manufacturing plant (creating 1,700 jobs) in Ireland, making it the biggest IT employer in the country. Meanwhile, Fujitsu says 570 jobs will go with the closure of its semiconductor factory in the northeast of England..
  -----------------------------------------------------------------     NOTES FROM HOME

As an Australian living in the US I think after reading this in my local paper on the net this morning I will be waiting for a while till I visit home again, things are getting worse in the land down under. The announcement that the water is not safe to drink in Sydney has been ongoing now for some time.  Like a third world country you have to boil the water in the largest city in Australia.  Just to add insult to injury a dam has now been closed in Adelaide because of a similar infestation.  -----------------------------------------------------------------
